India’s electricity demand is rising sharply as temperatures increase across the country. On March 7, demand hit 233 GW, and on March 10, it reached 234 GW, surpassing March 2024’s peak of 222 GW. This trend is expected to continue as summer approaches.

Why is Demand Rising?
Warmer Weather: Rising temperatures have led to increased use of air conditioners, fans, and cooling appliances.
Business and Industrial Activity: Offices, factories, and commercial spaces are consuming more electricity as they work to meet financial year-end deadlines.
Steady Winter Demand: Warmer-than-usual winters kept electricity consumption high even in the colder months.
What’s Next?
Experts predict power demand will grow by 4.5% in FY25 and 6% in FY26, potentially reaching 270 GW. To meet this rising demand, the government has mandated coal-based power plants to operate at full capacity until June. Additionally, coal stocks have been increased to 55.83 million tonnes, ensuring around 18 days of continuous power supply. These measures aim to prevent power shortages and ensure stable electricity availability across the country.
